11.2.7 What might my elementary student learn about history and social studies?

History should be alive and relevant. There are so many great stories of people, wars, reigns, inventions, explorations, and eras that affect our lives today. Children love learning about ancient people, brave missionaries, and intrepid explorers, and the actions and beliefs of these people have shaped our culture and who we are as individuals. We can’t fully understand our current world unless we know where the ideas our society is built on came from. Furthermore, we can’t understand who we are as a society without understanding the modern people, institutions, and laws that make up our country and community.

When I first began homeschooling, I bought a beautiful history curriculum with a heavy teacher book. We worked out of such materials for a couple of years. And we didn’t enjoy it. Okay, once again, let’s remember we all homeschool differently. In my own personal homeschool, though, history is nearly as important as Bible. For us, Bible and history are the lenses through which we see all the other subjects as well as current events. So the fact that we all hated how we were doing history was not acceptable. I got rid of all my history curricula, even some I had bought ahead of time and had never used (remember my mistake from chapter 8?). My used bookstore lady I sold it to thought I had gone mad. Yet those books were what was driving me mad. It is a short trip to madness, and I don’t need help.

I have found there are several curricula that help parents teach history from sources other than traditional textbooks. Like fun books. We have begun to really enjoy museums. We look for historical landmarks and museums when we travel as a family. We watch history documentaries and movies from a historical era. We visit art museums to learn about creative expression and artifacts from long ago. We have more fun with history than with any other subject.

When I began having older students in the house, this became even easier. The younger ones began soaking up what their siblings were talking about. They looked through the history books lying around the house. They even enjoyed picture books on the same topic. So this subject has become more and more enjoyable for us as the years go by.
